The growth of the Central Business District has been organic, evolving naturally from a small commercial core in the early days on the west bank of the Kinta River part now known as the Old Town. Eventually the growth extended cross the river to the New Town on the east bank. Much of the surrounding have not been planned to allow for this inevitable expansion of the central core and has therefore led to congestion and environmental degradation.
